Chong Zhang is a Tenured Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Tsinghua University. He also serves as the Executive Deputy Director of the Beijing Key Laboratory of Recombinant Proteins and Biomanufacturing. He is the lead instructor for the "Foundations of Engineering Biology," a specialized course tailored for Tanwei college .
His research interests lie at the intersection of synthetic biotechnology and biomanufacturing. Professor Zhang has authored over 160 peer-reviewed papers in prestigious journals, including Nature Chemical Biology, Nature Communications, and Science Advances. His intellectual property portfolio includes over 20 Chinese patents, and he has spearheaded the formulation of five national standards.
Beyond his research and teaching, he holds several leadership roles in the scientific community, including Secretary General of the Microbe Breeding Branch of the China Biotech Fermentation Industry Association (CBFIA), and committee member for both the National Working Group on Bioprocess Standardization and the Industrial Microbiology Committee of the Chinese Society for Microbiology (CSM).
His academic excellence has been recognized with numerous accolades, such as the Gold Medal at the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva, the First Prize of the Technical Invention Award, and the Second Prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award awarded by the China National Light Industry Council (CNLIC). In 2018, he was selected for the National High-level Young Talent Program.
